Importing Scan Data in 3DS Max
Welcome to this 3DS Max tutorial! 🎉 In this guide, we’ll cover importing scan data, setting up a proxy model, and preparing it for export to Create.
1️⃣ Opening & Setting Up Scene Explorer
📌 Why is Scene Explorer Important?
- It lists all objects in the scene.
- Helps in organizing and managing hierarchy.
- Essential for creating parent-child relationships in your model.
✅ Fixing Scene Explorer Issues:
- If missing, go to Customize → Show Explorers → Scene Explorer.
- If it’s a floating window, try docking it to the left of the viewport.
- On Windows 11, shrink the 3DS Max window first, then drag & dock.
- Adjust the width so the Frozen tab is visible (useful when importing).
2️⃣ Importing Scan Data
- Click File → Import → Select your scan file.
- If the scan comes in frozen, go to Scene Explorer → Unfreeze Selection.
- Ensure the scan is properly aligned in the scene before modeling.
3️⃣ Creating a Proxy Model
- Start modeling around the scan data for an accurate representation.
- Use basic shapes (boxes, cylinders) and modify as needed.
- Keep it low-poly to ensure performance efficiency.
4️⃣ Preparing for Export
- Apply materials and set up hierarchy in Scene Explorer.
- Use FBX export settings to ensure proper transfer.
- Import the scan & proxy model into Create for authoring.
