Modifiers & Their Functions in 3DS Max
1οΈβ£ Symmetry Modifier π
- Creates a mirrored copy of the geometry along an axis.
- Use the Mirror in the modifier stack drop-down to adjust the symmetry plane.
- Can be used on X, Y, and Z axes simultaneously.
β Tip: Use the Flip button to swap mirrored sides.
2οΈβ£ Mirror Modifier π
- Flips an object without needing a mirrored duplicate.
- Allows control over X, Y, and Z axes mirroring.
3οΈβ£ FFD (Free-Form Deformation) Box π¦
- Creates a bounding control cage to manipulate an object.
- Use Control Points to push, pull, and distort the shape.
- Works well for organic modeling & soft adjustments.
β Tip: Increase segment count before applying FFD for finer control.
4οΈβ£ Bend Modifier π
- Curves an object based on an angle and direction.
- Can limit effect using Upper & Lower Limits.
- Adjust bending axis (X, Y, or Z).
β Tip: Add more segments to your object to prevent jagged deformations.
5οΈβ£ Taper Modifier πΊ
- Scales one side of an object while keeping the other fixed.
- Adjust amount & axis to control tapering effect.
- Can be used to make cone-like shapes or distorted cylinders.
6οΈβ£ TurboSmooth Modifier π
- Subdivides polygons to create smoother surfaces.
- Adjust Iterations for finer smoothing.
β Tip: Turbosmooth essentially quadruples the polycount of a model with each iteration. Use TurboSmooth sparingly and keep an eye on your poly count.
7οΈβ£ Shell Modifier ποΈ
- Adds thickness to flat surfaces or planes.
- Adjust Outer & Inner Amount for control.
- Includes beveling options for smooth transitions.
β Tip: Great for walls, panels, & hollow objects.
8οΈβ£ ProOptimizer Modifier π
- Reduces polygon count while preserving shape.
9οΈβ£ Chamfer Modifier πΆ
- Rounds off sharp edges for a softer look.
- Adjust Amount & Segments for smoothness.
- Use Minimum Angle to control which edges are affected.
β Tip: Set Minimum Angle to 46Β° to avoid unwanted chamfering.
π Push Modifier β¬οΈ
- Moves vertices along their normals.
- Can be used to inflate or expand an object.
β Tip: Works well for cloth, organic forms, or soft surfaces.
